Every plumbing system has a main shutoff valve that will shut off all the water in the house. One of the first things you should do when you move into a new house or have a new house built is ask the plumber where the main shut off valve is located. It’s usually beside the water meter. Indeed, there are usually two shutoff valves beside the water meter. You should turn off the meter that’s next to the pipe that leads to the outside so the water meter isn’t damaged.
