Imagine there’s a flood in your house. You don’t know where it originates because it’s coming from the wall, or cascading from the ceiling, or down the staircase. It’s after normal work hours so you call the emergency plumber, knowing very well that whatever job needs to be done is going to be expensive. If only you knew how to shut off the water!

Even if you don’t have an emergency, you might want to add or repair fixtures or renovate your kitchen or bathroom. This might also necessitate turning off the water to the whole house, and stopping the flow of water through all the water lines in the entire property. But how do you turn off the water? Every plumbing system has a main shutoff valve that will shut off all the water in the house. One of the first things you should do when you move into a new house or have a new house built is ask the plumber where the main shut off valve is located. It’s usually beside the water meter. Indeed, there are usually two shutoff valves beside the water meter. You should turn off the meter that’s next to the pipe that leads to the outside so the water meter isn’t damaged.
