If your home in the San Gabriel Valley was built before the 1980s, you likely have cast iron sewer pipes. For decades, cast iron was the gold standard—strong, quiet, and durable. But nothing lasts forever.

As these pipes hit the 50-70 year mark, homeowners are facing a choice: repair the old iron or replace it with modern ABS plastic.

The Lifespan Problem

Cast iron pipes rust from the inside out. The bottom of the pipe, where water flows constantly, thins out over time. This is called “channeling” or “bottom rot.” Eventually, the bottom disappears completely, allowing sewage to leak into the soil and causing the line to collapse.

Signs your cast iron is failing:

  • Frequent backups even after snaking.
  • Cockroaches appearing in the house (they enter through pipe cracks).
  • Smell of sewage in the yard or basement.

Enter ABS Plastic

Modern sewer lines are made of Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) plastic. It is the black pipe you see in hardware stores.

Advantages of ABS

1. Immortality (Almost): Plastic does not rust. It is impervious to corrosion from tough soil or chemical drain cleaners. It is expected to last 50-100 years.

2. Smooth Flow: The interior is perfectly smooth, meaning debris flows faster and clogs are less frequent than in rough, rusty iron pipes.

3. Cost: Materials are significantly cheaper than metal.

The One Downside: Noise

Cast iron is heavy and dense, which muffles the sound of rushing water. ABS is light. If you replace vertical drain stacks in your walls with plastic, you might hear the “whoosh” of the toilet flushing from the living room.

  • The Fix: We can wrap exposed ABS pipes in insulation to dampen the sound.

When to Switch

If you have a single crack in a cast iron pipe, we might be able to patch it or reline it. But if the pipe is suffering from extensive bottom rot or lengthy cracks, replacement is the only viable option.

Switching to ABS is an upgrade for your home’s value and hygiene. Contact Western Rooter for a camera inspection to see how much life your iron pipes have left.
