A house full of guests, hours of snacking, and a kitchen sink working overtime is a recipe for a slow drain turning into a full backup right when you have the most people over.

The Garbage Disposal Takes the Biggest Hit
Wing bones, chip bags full of grease, dip containers scraped clean into the sink — game day food is hard on a garbage disposal. Fibrous scraps, bones, and grease are the top reasons disposals jam or start humming instead of spinning right in the middle of a party. Run cold water before, during, and after using the disposal, and scrape plates into the trash instead of the sink whenever you can.
Grease Is the Silent Drain Killer
Chili, wings, and fried food all leave grease behind, and grease doesn’t just wash away — it cools, hardens, and coats the inside of your pipes. Over a few hours of cooking and cleanup, that buildup can narrow a drain line enough to cause a backup that shows up as standing water in the sink right when the game is on. Wipe greasy pans out with a paper towel before washing them, and let hot water run for a bit after any greasy cleanup.
More People, More Flushes, More Load on Your Sewer Line
A house that normally has two or three people using the bathroom might have ten or twelve on game day. If your sewer line already has roots, buildup, or an aging section of pipe, that extra load is often what pushes a slow drain into a full clog. If your drains have already been running slow, it’s worth getting them cleared before the party rather than after.
Signs You Should Call Before Kickoff, Not After
- Sinks or tubs draining slower than usual over the past week or two
- Gurgling sounds from a drain when another fixture is used
- A toilet that needs multiple flushes to clear
- Any past history of root intrusion or an older clay sewer line
