PEX (cross-linked polyethylene) pipe has become one of the most common materials plumbers use for repiping homes, and for good reason. It is flexible, resists corrosion, and installs faster than rigid pipe — which usually means less demo and a lower labor bill for the homeowner. What Is PEX Pipe?

PEX stands for cross-linked polyethylene. It is a flexible plastic tubing that has largely replaced rigid copper and CPVC in new construction and repipe jobs across Southern California. The cross-linking process improves the material’s resistance to temperature swings, pressure, and chemical exposure, and it does not pit, scale, or corrode the way metal pipe can over time.

Why Plumbers and Homeowners Like PEX

  • Flexibility — PEX bends around corners and through wall cavities, which means fewer fittings and fewer potential leak points compared to rigid pipe.
  • Freeze resistance — the tubing can expand up to three times its diameter, so it’s far less likely to split if water inside it freezes.

  • Corrosion resistance — unlike copper piping, PEX won’t develop pinhole leaks from acidic water or electrolysis.
